2 Cor 6:18
“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.”
Family is a big part of God’s plan for our lives. Besides God, it’s the highest ranking command we are given – “Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land.” It ranks high because family is a representation of who we are in God. Our biological family gives us the framework to be able to think about our Spiritual family. Paul tells us that God himself is our Father and that we are his sons and daughters.
Of course, family isn’t always easy. For some of us, it can be a challenge to even be in close proximity to our family, let alone be thankful for them. For even the best families, there are times when it’s hard to be thankful for your family.
But, even when it feels like there is nothing at all to be thankful for, there is always something. If nothing else, then your very existence is a reason to be thankful. There may be times that you’re not even sure about that, but rest assured, the world is a better place because you’re in it.
So, today, as we start of this series of things we’re thankful for, let’s start by being thankful for our families. Look for the things you’re thankful for and thank God for them. Don’t get hung up on all the things you’re not thankful for. Don’t get hung up on all the things you’d like to change, all the things you would like to fix, all the things you’d like to take away. Focus on the things you’re thankful for, and be thankful to God for them!
