Why are you a coward? Don’t get mad at me, that’s what Jesus asked his disciples. 🙂
Do you still not have faith? The disciples had been with Jesus for quite some time now, and had seen him perform many miracles – healings, turning water to wine, etc. It seems like it should have been clear to the disciples that Jesus was sent from out of this world. They had witnessed all these miracles firsthand and still, when their fears consumed them, the doubted Jesus.
Of course, this helped to bolster the faith of the disciples. But how about us? Do we do the same thing? Absolutely we do. When life throws another storm our way, we begin to doubt. We get overwhelmed by the storm, and fear overtakes us. And we find ourselves wondering where God is in our time of need.
Faith is obviously a big thing for Jesus. He talks about it a lot. He also talks a lot about how little of it we have. He tells us that faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain. Is that equal to the amount of faith it takes to calm a storm? If only there was an equation to help us figure it out.
The problem is, we get distracted by the details of how much faith is equal to a mustard seed, instead of building our faith. I don’t think we need to be worried about what the mustard seed represents to us, other than the fact that we don’t have enough faith. Just as the disciples didn’t have enough faith in Jesus to calm the storm.
So, as Jesus would ask, “Why are you so cowardly? Do you still not have faith?”
Stilling of a Storm
35 On that day, when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go across to the other side of the lake.” 36 So after leaving the crowd, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat, and other boats were with him. 37 Now a great windstorm developed and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was nearly swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to die?” 39 So he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Be quiet! Calm down!” Then the wind stopped, and it was dead calm. 40 And he said to them, “Why are you cowardly? Do you still not have faith?” 41 They were overwhelmed by fear and said to one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and sea obey him!”
God help us to be people who have faith the size of a mustard seed. When we are in the middle of a storm and it feels like you’re sleeping, help us to remember all the things you have done for us in the past – all the way that you have proven yourself FAITHful and draw our faith from you.
