Dense Disciples

This week, we try to catch as much of Jesus’ life in this one sermon as we possibly can. Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost. Jesus came for all mankind. It’s hard to sum up Jesus’ ministry in one sermon, but then again we don’t have to. We have all the gospels to get a better understanding of Jesus.

There are 3 sets of 3 themes that go through this passage that we are going to focus on for this week of Ironic. Three times where Jesus talks about the Disciples not understanding, 3 times where Jesus talks about Children and 3 times where he predicts his own death. As we will see these three themes all come together in one last healing that Jesus performs before going into the last week of his life before the crucifixion.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mk. 8:21 – Do you still not understand?

Mk. 9:32 But they did not understand this statement and were afraid to ask him.

Mk. 10:38 – But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking!

All things are possible for the one who believes.” 9:24 Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

“The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand this statement and were afraid to ask him.

Jesus Speaks of the Children – 9:36

  • Welcome a Child in My name

  • Children were very insignificant in ancient culture, making them the perfect counter to the disciples’ selfish ambitions

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

9:42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea.

10:13 Now people were bringing little children to him for him to touch, but the disciples scolded those who brought them. 10:14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  10:15 I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” 10:16 After he took the children in his arms, he placed his hands on them and blessed them.

Jesus Speaks of the children again in 10:13

  • The Disciples (Having just been told to welcome a child in Jesus’ name) Scold those who are bringing the children

  • Jesus says we have to receive the Kingdom of God like a child.

Three Predictions by Jesus

  1. 1st Prediction – Mk. 8:31

    1. 31 Then Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke openly about this. So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But after turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but on man’s.”

    2. Peter Confesses Jesus is the Christ

    3. Jesus makes a prediction about his death

    4. Peter says never

    5. Jesus says get behind me Satan.

    6. “You are not setting your mind on God’s intents but on Man’s

Jesus says Whoever wants to follow me must Deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.

34 Then Jesus called the crowd, along with his disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it. 36 For what benefit is it for a person to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his life? 37 What can a person give in exchange for his life? 38 For if anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

James & John see Jesus transfigured.

  1. 2nd Prediction – Mk. 9:31

    1. 30 They went out from there and passed through Galilee. But Jesus did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand this statement and were afraid to ask him.

    2. (Arguing About the Greatest) 33 Then they came to Capernaum. After Jesus was inside the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 After he sat down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

    3. Jesus Had just Predicted His Death for the second time.

    4. The disciples are arguing about who is the greatest among them.

    5. Jesus says, whoever will be first among you must be servant of all

9:42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea.

Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

The Children

10:14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  10:15 I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” 10:16 After he took the children in his arms, he placed his hands on them and blessed them.

The Rich Man

  • Kingdom of God isn’t about Power & wealth

    • it’s about being a servant

“You lack one thing. Go, sell whatever you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

“Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

10:31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

  1. 3rd Prediction – Mk. 10:33

    1. 32 They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem. Jesus was going ahead of them, and they were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was going to happen to him. 33 “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and experts in the law. They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles. 34 They will mock him, spit on him, flog him severely, and kill him. Yet after three days, he will rise again.”

    2. Jesus Had just predicted His death for the Third Time, including the way in which he would die.

    3. James and John ask Jesus for the position of power.

    4. Jesus says you don’t know what you’re asking

    5. Jesus says whoever wants to be great must be the servant, who ever wants to be first must be the slave of all.

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 10:36 He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 10:37 They said to him, “Permit one of us to sit at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.” 10:38 But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking!

“You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions use their authority over them. 10:43 But it is not this way among you. Instead whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, 10:44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of all. 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus.

  • Blind Beggar

  • One Last miracle before “THE WEEK”

  • One last example for the disciples of why He came

  • Have mercy on Me

  • Your FAITH has healed you.

  • He regained his sight, and FOLLOWED Jesus on the road.

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.”

He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus.

Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi, let me see again.”

Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the road.

Jesus is calling us to a life that is not tied down to the things of this world. He wants to give us a new way to see the world (Instead of seeing a world of possible gain, we need to see those who need a Savior) so that we can follow Him like a child.

Deny Yourself and Follow Like a Child.
