I’ve made a big deal of this topic for a while now, and will probably continue to do so for a long time. If we do religious acts without love, there is absolutely no point in them. To shine a light in the darkness, we must shine the light with love.
Darkness is offended by the light. That’s the natural state of things. As when you turn on a light in a dark room the darkness immediately retreats, darkness cannot overcome the light as that is also the nature of things. For us to add offense the shining of our light, is adding offense to something that’s already offensive.
So, as we seek to be a church that loves the way Christ loves, we must be sure that it is only through love that we can make the name of Christ known. It is only through love that we can make a difference in our families, our neighborhoods, our workplace – our 8 -15. If we do not have love, we shouldn’t even bother. We will be nothing but an annoyance. We will be like a gong or clanging cymbal, just making noise and driving people insane. We’re running around, performing in “The Gong Show: Road Edition.”
But, if we have love – if we can do what we have been called to do in a loving way – then the real light can shine.
Our attempts to shine our own light, is a fake light which makes it just another form of darkness. Darkness does nothing to darkness.
But, if we have love and we do what we’re supposed to do with love, the light of Jesus shines through us. The same kind of unconditional love Jesus showed us on the cross – this love – shines a light that darkness cannot control.
