What comes out when life squeezes you? When things get tough how do you respond? Have you ever been amazed at the way people respond to difficult circumstances? There have been some people in my life who never seem to respond in the wrong way. Sure, I know I’m not around them all the time, but it just seems that they are in a place where they can always respond to adversity in the right way.

I have this theory that who we are when we are getting squeezed says a lot about who we really are underneath the show we put on for the rest of the world. When things are hard and we are being pressed in from all sides, the real us starts to come out. The question is, what is that person like? 30-Days-With-Jesus

No matter what that person looks like, none of us could every compare with Jesus. When all his defenses were down, after he had been without food for a month and ten days, he was faced with a great temptation. One that we would probably give in to even if everything had been going well in our lives. He was literally offered the world, and he turned it down.

When Jesus was starving and tired, he had the presence of mind and spirit to be able to respond to these evil temptations with the word of God. Every time he was being tempted he responded with scripture.

Matthew 4:1-11

1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he fasted forty days and forty nights he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you’ and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Once again it is written: ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur. And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you throw yourself to the ground and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to his needs.

Prayer Focus

As you read through the scripture, as God to help you internalize the scripture. Ask for his help in planting the word deep in your mind so that when you are squeezed by life, it is the word that comes out and not something else.
