Isaiah 9:2, 6–7 (NIV)
2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end…
Isaiah speaks into fear and threat, and he refuses to lie about the darkness. But he also refuses to pretend darkness is final.
Joy, here, is not denial. It’s prophetic hope—hope sturdy enough to sing before the sunrise. Isaiah announces a coming King with titles that are bigger than the problems surrounding God’s people. Wonderful Counselor means wisdom in confusion. Mighty God means strength when you feel outmatched. Prince of Peace means wholeness, not just calm.
And Isaiah gives us a holy practice: hold the word when you don’t have the outcome. Some seasons give you fire. Some seasons give you a scroll—promises to carry.
Reflection Questions
- Where do you need to admit “darkness is real” without surrendering to it?
- Which title of Jesus do you most need today—and why?
Closing Prayer:
Jesus, be my light in the dark. Teach me joy that holds Your promises even when I can’t see the timeline. Amen.
