What’s this investment you speak of?
Like we have been saying, we’re a different kind of church. We don’t mean that in any derogatory sense about other churches. But, God has given us a mission to Do Justice, Love Mercy and Walk Humbly with God. If we’re going to be people who are able to live that out, we have to be a different kind of people. It takes courage to do justice. It takes depth and perspective to be able to love mercy. And none of this can be done without walking humbly with God.
So, we are in the process of developing/coaching our people to become the kind of people who are capable of living that kind of missional life. The thing is, that takes work. You don’t just decide you’re going to be that person, you have to go through the process of transformation and metamorphosis to get there. Paul talked about being “transformed” by the renewing of your mind. If you’ve ever tried to change the way you think you know that it’s not as easy as it sounds.
That’s where investment comes in. We expend a great deal of effort training, making resources, researching and studying the most effective methods for coaching people in their transformation journey. Here’s how it works.
Three times a year, we do 90 day intensives. We use journals, do daily reading, devotionals, encouragement, and other forms of coaching. If someone needs help, we meet with them one on one. This requires quite a bit of effort on our part, so we want to make sure that we’re investing our time and resources wisely.
That’s not to say that we won’t invest in you if you don’t put in the effort. We won’t ask you to leave our church if you’re not doing the work. None of that. But, more and more this is becoming who we are as a church. This is our culture. It’s who we are. We taking following Jesus seriously because it’s the best life.
We want so desperately for you to experience this kind of life, but the only way for that to happen is for you to make the choice to do it. We feel the bar has been set too low for what it means to be a Christ-follower in our time. The notion of praying a prayer and being set for eternity without doing anything else is not found anywhere in scripture. That’s the starting point, but too many people never even attempt to run the race.
