Ruth 2:11–12 (NIV)
11 Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. 12 May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
Joy doesn’t always arrive like fireworks. Sometimes it arrives like a field—ordinary, repetitive, and quietly faithful. Ruth’s story is full of small steps that don’t look “joyful” in the moment: grief, uncertainty, starting over, showing up to work with no guarantees.
But Scripture keeps showing this pattern: God often plants joy inside faithful obedience before He changes the circumstances. Ruth isn’t chasing a feeling—she’s clinging to the Lord when she has every reason to shut down. And Boaz recognizes it: she has come “under His wings.” That’s not poetic fluff. It’s refuge. It’s safety. It’s belonging.
If you’re in a season where joy feels impossible, Ruth gives you a starting point that doesn’t require pretending. Joy can begin as quiet trust: “God sees me in the ordinary.” Joy can begin as small faithfulness: “I will do the next right thing.” And joy can begin as refuge: “Even if I don’t feel strong, I am not exposed.”
Sometimes the miracle isn’t immediate rescue. Sometimes the miracle is that God keeps you moving without losing yourself.
Reflection Questions
- Where are you tempted to believe “ordinary” means “meaningless”?
- What is one faithful next step you can take today without needing a guarantee?
Closing Prayer:
Lord, help me trust You in the ordinary places. Teach me to find refuge under Your wings even when I can’t see the outcome. Amen.
