1 Kings 18:36–39 (NIV)
36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant… 37 Answer me, LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. 39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”
Some joy is a sudden relief: “God showed up.” That’s what happens here. Israel has been wavering, exhausted, confused, spiritually foggy—and God answers in a way no one can reframe.
Elijah doesn’t win because he’s loud. He wins because God is real. That’s a big difference. The story isn’t “be bold like Elijah.” The story is: false gods demand more and give less; the living God reveals Himself and turns hearts back.
And notice the mercy in the method: Elijah drenches the altar so no one can credit human effort. God removes loopholes. He removes excuses. He leaves room for only one conclusion: “The LORD—he is God.”
If you’re craving a dramatic sign, that desire might be honest. But the deeper invitation is this: God doesn’t always answer with fireworks, yet He is always the One who turns hearts back. Joy comes when you stop treating God like a theory and start trusting Him as Lord—whether the answer is fire or quiet faithfulness.
Reflection Questions
- Where have you been “wavering between two opinions” in your trust?
- What excuse do you most need God to remove—so you can finally obey?
Closing Prayer:
Lord, turn my heart back again. Give me joy that rests on who You are, not on my control. Amen.
